Not so long ago the only type of football bet was a simple bet on the outcome of a match - win, lose or draw. Today things have changed and bookies are falling over themselves to find new ways to bet on a single football game.
You can now bet on pretty much any aspect of a football match - be it goals scored, corners, half-time/full-time result, final score, yellow/red cards, first/last player to score and so on.
One of the first of these type of bets to gain general acceptance is what is known as the 'scorecast'. Pick the first player to score and predict the final score. Often the odds seemed enticing - Rooney to score first and Man Utd to win 3-1? Win £120 from a £10 bet! Sounds great, but it isn't.
Most of these new types of bets actually offer poor value in terms of the odds they offer. The bookies know what they are doing. In football betting it is generally true that the simplest bets will offer the best value on a consistent basis. The more intricate the bet the more likely the odds will be skewed in the bookies favour. So keep your bets simple and shop around for the best odds.
